Tsiknopempti – Not your average Thursday – 4th March 2021

On the 4th March 2021, Greeks all over the world get together to celebrate Tsiknopempti – Smokey Thursday.

Being the Greek version of Mardi Gras, it is part of Apokries – the three weeks of Greek Carnival.

It is the climax of the second week of Carnival, Kreatini (meat week), marking the last big week of feasting on meat before the forty days of Lent.

Lent starts on Clean Monday (15th March 2021) leading us to Greek Orthodox Easter, which is on 2nd May 2021!

Tsikna, meaning smoke in Greek, permeates the air of cities and villages all over Greece as friends and families all get together singing, drinking and dancing.

They gather in homes, tavernas and village squares grilling their hearts content of all kinds of meat throughout the night, coupled with copious amounts of Greek wine, beer and Tsipouro!

Tsiknopempti at Hungry Donkey always has been a big day, with hundreds of guests joining us to enjoy our legendary Souvlas and souvlaki!

This year, Hungry Donkey sadly cannot bring the festivities to Spitalfields!

EVEN BETTER thoughit will bring the festivities wherever you are throughout the UK.
