Celebrate Greek Mardi Gras – Thursday 20th February

Greek souvla cooking on chargrill

Join us at Hungry Donkey to celebrate Tsiknopempti, where meat is king, and you can enjoy delicious grilled meat platters in a carnival atmosphere!

Tsiknopempti, meaning “smokey Thursday”, is part of the traditional Greek Carnival celebrations, marking the last meat feast before Greek Lent begins. This particular Thursday of each year provides the high point of the parties and festivities for Greek Mardi Gras or “Apokries”.

This year, Hungry Donkey is bringing the festivities to Spitalfields, London yet again. Serving up a mouth-watering selection of pork, lamb and chicken Souvla — all spit-roasted to perfection in our kitchen. All dishes will be served with our exciting salads & sides — from tzatziki to good old traditional Greek pita bread — and accompanied by Greek music for all to enjoy.

Along with the music, wine will be in full flow too! We have picked out some great reds to bring out the flavours of the Souvla representing great wines from all corners of Greece.  Medium to full bodied reds, like Rouvalis Tsigello (Aigio), Monemvasia Winery Monemvasios (Lakonia), Sigalas MM (Santorini), and Karidas Xinomavro (Naoussa). For whites, Douloufakis Dafnios (Crete), Nopera Roya (Samos), Gerovassiliou Malagouzia and Argyros Assyrtiko (Santorini) are great alternatives

And don’t worry, for those who prefer non-meat dishes, our usual vegetarian options still apply.

What better way to enjoy your Thursday? If you’d like to be part be the party, book now to reserve a table — first come first served!

Celebrations will last all day and include lunch and evening sittings. We are currently taking bookings for up to 8 guests and have extended our opening hours to 23.30. We look forward to welcoming you.

PS. Guests can pre-order their souvlas for collection as well.
